Immediately.
Or at least in the next few days.
1. Do a backup.
Do a virus/spyware scan, then do a Backup.
If you don't have a backup system, at least use CDRs.
Or get a backup system.

2. Make a Restore Point.
If your system is too old to have this built-in, get Norton GoBack.

I've seen way too many people hurt lately by the torture if dying computers.
Please. You'll be glad you did.

*winghugs to those in need*.

If only more people would do the first one regularly. With my backups, I've been able to put everything on a new computer the very same day and I've done so once every about 4 years or so when a system failure happens.

I've certainly forgotten on some systems, too... *wings to face and shakes head* ...Just hoping to see a lot fewer computery disappointments in people's lives as time goes on.. ^v^

Good advice! I *finally* got a backup for my machine: so simple that even a technotard can figure it out (unless you run OSX.2.8)! Just plug it in and (after a brief set up), press a button to back your machine up! (You can also set it up for regular timed backups)

Good one, yup! :D

I've installed a few of those over the last year :>
I got a basic 40G AcomData one on sale a couple years ago, and I know I should do backups more often... I figure once a week for businesses at the least, and once a month for home systems is a good target. Sometimes it's about 6 months before I get to it, but I try not to push it much farther, and most important, get a good fresh backup of each new system for at least a working base to fall back on in a worst case scenario.

*hehheh... fluffs feathers* ^v^
Just a few saddening encounters with friend's and associate's machines over the last few weeks, mostly...
Also finally opened up a machine I had loaned to me bruddah last year, and found gobs o' spyware, virususses and adware on there too... ;P
Worst of all is that although I got those off of there, sometimes the sweeps can't repair all the damage. In this case I can't interpret javascript at all anymore. *snif*

I'm fairly sure a browser upgrade would fix it, but I've been trying to find a less intrusive way, and haven't yet.

But yeah... I jus' wish people could *use* their computers with less woes and hiccups, and backups/restore points can really do a lot to ensure dat ^v^

That is an excellent suggestion.

Each week or so I back up all my personal files into an external drive. I also use Ghost once a month, too. Putting personal stuff on external disks is a very good idea, I think.

GoBack is great for most purposes, and I honestly loved it. It's quite a system hog, though, and the occasional game I indulge in doesn't often take kindly to it.

With all the writing and work I do on my computer, a data loss would be catastrophic.

Hey Muse!
Yesh... Ghost izza good one for backup-imaging the entire drive, yup!
Newer systems have a good built-in solution, which just needs to be turned on. *peep* With HUGE hard drives these days and larger RAM defaults, the system resource drains are less of a bother anymore, luckily *wags feathers*...
I found that DriveImage2002 is awwwesome for doing backup-restore CDs too.

Other items that I find essential for Windows of late:
SpySweeper
V-Com Utilities
a hardward firewall preferably (usually using LinkSys)
a virus catcher that works (Norton seems to work on less than half the systems I try anymore, since they've been reducing backwards compatibility for a few years, but I hear the 2005 version is an improvement)

Good to hear your system is pretty well secured!

Always a good point. I wonder though... where would I go if I felt my computer needed more spyware loaded onto the hard drive?

XP does a snapshot every time it's booted sucessfully (or is it when it's shut down normally, I forget, darn Alzhiemer's is a terrible thing to waste! ;-).

Win2K is much more problematic, and you're advice on the GoBack is solid.

For XP folks, take a peek at your System Restor properties like so:

R Click on My Computer
Select Properties
Click on the System Restore tab

Verify Turn off System Restore is NOT checked. Give System restore at least 2MB of disk space, 4MB+ is better, just leave the Disk Space slider all the way to the right is best.

And oddly 'nuff, I've found many systems (mostly non-Dell) don't have restore on as a default... ;P
'preciate ya peekin' into the thread! *wags*

At the moment I don't have much to lose...

For one, I'm a fledgling computer user but I do have a great pair of techie friends that will fix me right up if I have a problem or two. For another, I've only had my computer for almost 10 months. So far so good. But thanks for the advice in the future. *hugs*

Heh. I've been tortured by a dying computer for 2 months now, though sadly none of those things are the cause. It's a hardware problem that Sager just...can't...freaking...fix. In three tries.

I'm currently waging war by proxy to have the laptop declared a lemon. Wish me luck.

G'day! *yipes about the hardware hardships...* -_-

When it's not software, that can be a challenge too.... *wingpats...* I sure hope that you've got a backup, and that the overall battle will be won in your favor... best wishes to you, bird buddy..

Oh, of course I had backups. I regularly image my entire hard drive with Acronis TrueImage, to an external hard drive that's disconnected except when in use (to avoid virus contamination). Good thing, too: the original hard drive was declared persona non grata and removed during one of my three rounds of repair.

I hope that I find ya again soon, feathery one. *HUG*

You don't know me but since i'd looked in your journal about this topic i'd though i had to say something about this. after my first spyware incindent (this was before i knew i needed to take care of my computer). with my new computer i'd got from christmas. i'd had to use Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad Aware.

But later a nifty program called SpywareBlaster and that eliminated problems as well a Hijackthis for a interesting discovery of the RdxIE dll from realplayer (This came from an advanced search from Spybot)

And CWS Shredder, Winpatrol, and CCleaner. helped too.
and also this http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

hey.. no problem :>
