Okay, I finally did it. :|

After putting it off and hoping for help and solutions that I knew were out there somewhere, I reluctantly listened to the nudges of "just reinstall the OS to fix it" , to get my system 9 driver problems fixed.

And so now... it has fixed nothing, ...but I have to face the additional drudgery of manually fixing all my settings to what they were. -_-

Thank goodness for backups. I've gone down the high-hopes road before with Mac.

Yes it broke my desktop.
It broke my printers.
It broke my internet connection.
And who knows what else... *huge weary sigh*

And *still* it didn't solve the problem of drivers that can recognize the fact that I have only one monitor, and that I would like to use graphics programs, and put the machine to sleep instead of turn it off. I can do none of these, and reinstalling the OS did not fix it.

Yes, I use system X. Yes I am a part of the converted crowd.

But after using something (pre-system X) for some 15 years *because* of its appeal, I don't understand the widespread urge to diss it altogether just because something new comes along. Can't they exist together? They do exist together, and I don't see anything wrong with liking my Classic programs.
Eudora Pro, ...fast and text-based, effectively stopping spam and junkmail images that are unwelcome.
Muddweller, ...clean and capable and fast.
And so many other programs.

So yes I use system X.

But it is so disheartening that hardly anyone really cares about system 9 ... and trying to get it to work right. Guess ya really can't blame 'em. Still, it'd be nice if the simple answers to fix it, were easy to find... :/

I guess because it's such a big jump from System 9 to OSX that everyone jumped at the same time.

With windows it was a much faster jump, XP was a far better product than ME,98 and 95 due to being based on NT technology :)

*pats the poor Eagle* Have you tried any of the new programs? I used to use photoeditor to view ever picture till Windows fax&picture viewer came around which was much better for scrolling through lots of pictures.

I'm a windows user (For now) and I enjoyed using 98 and hated switching to XP. It was only then when I started having problems. If it wasn't for a computer crash and Microsoft not supporting 98 anymore I'd still be using it.

So, I fully understand what Ceagle is going threw.

Thanks for the comment... yeah XP sucked as badly as system X did for a while after it came out. Like molasses so very slowwwww.. and I'd find myself saying, "who's gonna fall for that?" But I guess it's just the spoon-feeding of progress.

And after a couple years, both systems now operate better than they used to, though it's complete horseshit that Mac OS X is crash-proof. I see more crashes on Macs in the last few years than I do on Windows any more. That's part of why I went to using iCab as my main browser, because it is such a solid relief in the midst of all that crash-happy mac stuff. Nowadays I also use Firefox (on both systems) a lot, but it really is like children's wooden blocks compared to iCab in customizeability.

But yeah, if it wasn't for Windows, I wouldn't be computing much at all lately. I've got a slick 1.7 ghz machine I got at Fry's for just around $200 brand new last year at this time, and it is rock solid. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] level_head I already had a nice monitor and speakers, and after adding a $60 video card, I could use nice video game capabilities like SecondLife. I don't think the OS has ever crashed even once. On the Mac in system X, a month doesn't go by that ya don't get the endless spinning beach ball, or a program that pukes or won't even open. There are still subtle capabilities in editing with Photoshop on the Mac that make it a better option, though... so I feel that sting.

Apple has taken a die-hard advocate, and turned me into a "blase who cares which OS" user, and lately even into a "windows is better for most things now" user. It's much easier to debug the registry than Apple-BSD packages and kernels. And while those can be fun learning experiences, when it comes to my home machine, I just want things to work. :|

hehheh.. I work with many versions of the OS, with different clients. :9

You don't plan on upgrading?? nyah ah ah!!... wot do you mean you won't upgrade? you can't escape now!! 8> 8>

*fuzzles ya* :>
So yeah, I have to deal with system 9 machines, and system 10.1.5+, 10.2.4+, and 10.3.4+ mostly... and all of 'em are sticky now n then.
The one I was working on two days ago was a 10.2.8 eMac, and they also had an XP machine, and a Win98 machine that both needed attention. It can be hard to explain to folks that this is the real world... a huge number of people don't upgrade that often, because things just *work* for them.

One multimillion dollar bizness I know wants to keep their billing in a DOS program.. they say, hey, it works, and the billing lady likes it!

So anyway, I digress.. :> .. but yep, that's the one I was referring to.

I keep multiple versions of as many Os'es as I can on useable machines for testing and work reference, 10.1, .2, and .3 (not 10.0 though.. that's fairly useless). Just because I like system 9 on my personal machine, the townspeople wanna torch me a lot of the time, but it's not hurting anybody.. *peep*

Sorry it took me an extry day to get back to you, kind sir.. I took a day off the net yesterday.. highly zonked :>

Totally heartily agree with ya on the 10.3.9 declaration, dragony! ^V^ *wags*
Itsa sorta rhetorical fact, but true, since that isn't what's affecting my system, but indeed a fact that if all the people with whom I worked would upgrade to 10.3.9 or greater, or 10.4.5 or greater, many of their problems might be solved. *peep*

*wags to the fuzzlin'* Glad to hear a system 9 machine helps ya out sometimes ^V^ ... I'm sorta lookin' forward to the MacBooks down the road also, but I know it's down the road, since it's doubtful I'll buy any new (either for financial or foundational reasons) Apple products any time soon.... 8|

So you havion' probs with PS and Illo too? *wingpats gently*.. that's ouchy... -_-
Yeah, I'm either using CS on 10.3.9 or Elements on XP right now, until I can get those others running again.
I just tried another ATI installation last night, and it still didn't help.... getting "system components missing" errors, so I think I may need to locate a factory-system-9 installer disk.

*smiles a bit to the patpats*

Yes.. I use the system X programs, yep. (see above)

The thing I'm pissed at mostly is ATI itself, for yanking the download archive, probably due to some shaking finger telling them to do so... not because the program doesn't exist any more, but because the all-knowing big brother of capitalism is telling them to shove it under the table.
So much for *true* support.

that would be beautiful ^V^

okay Mr. Phelps, here's the challenge...
It probably needs to be from the classic system folder of someone who ran a startup version of classic on a Powerbook G4, 800mhz.

My previous machine was a 667mhz, and although it reputedly had the same or very similar ATI card in it, the screen is slightly larger (old screen I think was 1154x768 and new one is 1280x854), the drivers that were in the system folder extensions did not work properly, ...or maybe the version of "Monitors", or .. well, it seems like it would be the ATI drivers...

Who knows, maybe there is even a system 9 installer disk that can work, but the ones I was graciously given did not work, unfortunately... so that's why I'd like to try the individual components.

*peep* .. that would be cool.. ^V^
Jus' so ya know, I installed the "RADEON-0210.hqx" one, so if it's that, it didn't help... but another one might.. I dunno... still getting a big "X" over the "ATI Graphics Accelerator" extension at startup, which is what's been happening all along, so there may be an extension conflict also, ...dunnos. :|

The Archive.Org site and VersionTracker both suggest that the driver update was "http://mirror2.ati.com/drivers/radeon-0206.hqx" ... but they have removed it, and all Classic support, looks like.... ;P
