I sometimes use the exaggeration "An house is not an home" to illustrate the misuse of the article before the consonant "H", because arrogant newscasters and commentators tend to say things like "An historic moment" to sound like they know english better than the rest of us.... but I actually heard one say 'an house' just now on tv.... arrrgh! :P

An honor ... correct
An homage ... correct
An host, an hobnail, an hovercraft ... wrong

(the article preceding the H is guided by whether it is silent, and thus used as a vowel, or emphasized as a consonant)

:D Glad you dug the icon too.. I didn't have one for that effect until I saw this (http://www.unlikeminerva.com/comics/index.php?date=20010607) and just knew it was practically perfect!

I'm not very good with English. I use grammar check a lot.

Thanks for the link to the comic. At first I was like "Ok, what's going on?" but I started to like it. Peter is a riot.

I was disappointed how they ended it and then restarted in another comic but sent Peter off in the first strip.

Anyways, thanks bud. *Hugs*

Yes... but your jests... are the bests! Wasn't running
for the hills (or even 'an hill' ^_^) but was merely
acknowledging my noticing the same thing from time to
time. (Though based on my own news=watching experience,
I hardly think that any newscaster could make a
convincing argument to the effect that they are more
skilled in the English language than the average person!
I've heard some *dumb* things come out of those mouths
with microphones in front of them...)

Aw, thanks. Actually, I've just thought... why is 'an homage' correct? I pronounce homage with the h. Am I wrong, or just English? :>

indeed good sir!

It's likely because the dictated pronunciation of homage is "ahm-idge" or "oh-mahhhdge", and if one pronounces it like "hummus" or "home-ahhdge", methinks that is indeed a cultural linguistic affectation, in which case all bets are off :D
(in other words, I wouldn't know what to say is correct in your locality, but probably saying it the way everyone else does for the purpose of harmonious communication is correct. That's the overall goal of yak anyways, successful communication with the fewest speed bumps) ... :> *wags feathers*

*Laughs* You'd be surprised how often I hear an inappropriate silent 'H' around my church. Did you know we're supposed to be 'umble in the sight of God? It just sounds wierd! 'eh, 'eh, 'eh.

'ave the best

*lols...* :D
True true.... another local matter of pronunciation I would theeeeenk!
And my inclination is that this is just fine, as long as the "sound rule" still applies to the article.... so that if the h is silent, use "an" and if the h is used as a huffing consonant, g'wan ahead and use the "a" preceding, just so that the language flows as rhythmically as possible ... *chyrp!*

Heh...grammatical errors that drive me nuts are:

1. People who use "It's"(the contraction) where "its"(the possessive) is appopriate.

2. People who say "nucular" instead of "nuclear". It's a NUCLEAR reactor, okay?! It works by reacting atomic nuclei! There is no such thing as a nucule! ;)

totally!
That first one really is a problem a lot... oy!
Here's a fun page with LOTS of them compiled... http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/

and nucular... egads! That is one of the worst ones, since we have a president up there plastered all over the news giving this bad example ALL the time... ;P
He MUST have people around him who can correct him... is he simply incapable of getting it right? Or unwilling...? bleah!! ;P
*scritches ya thankfully for your input*
