I sometimes use the exaggeration "An house is not an home" to illustrate the misuse of the article before the consonant "H", because arrogant newscasters and commentators tend to say things like "An historic moment" to sound like they know english better than the rest of us.... but I actually heard one say 'an house' just now on tv.... arrrgh! :P

An honor ... correct
An homage ... correct
An host, an hobnail, an hovercraft ... wrong

(the article preceding the H is guided by whether it is silent, and thus used as a vowel, or emphasized as a consonant)

peep!

indeed good sir!

It's likely because the dictated pronunciation of homage is "ahm-idge" or "oh-mahhhdge", and if one pronounces it like "hummus" or "home-ahhdge", methinks that is indeed a cultural linguistic affectation, in which case all bets are off :D
(in other words, I wouldn't know what to say is correct in your locality, but probably saying it the way everyone else does for the purpose of harmonious communication is correct. That's the overall goal of yak anyways, successful communication with the fewest speed bumps) ... :> *wags feathers*
