That *awful awful* Samsung SL30 camera I wrote about... turns out I got it in early October, and so the 90-day return option is over at Target.
So I took it and donated it to the local Thrift Shop. Was sure to disclose that it takes nice pictures in lightweight situations, like indoors, but can't handle outdoors and extremes. Hopefully that will be good for someone.

next step: give it scathing reviews around the internet, mostly because the mild mediocre review I gave it at the Samsung site was rejected... "Oh! We can't have an honest range of reviews here!"....
It's too bad, because I hadn't encountered a bad Samsung product before, but this makes me gun-shy.

Will prolly replace it with a Canon or Fuji when I get around to it.

Welp, there it is! :9

Go for either Canon, Sony or Panasonic if you're looking for point-and-shoot. They've been in the market since forever so they know what they're doing and what customers want.

I agree - I've always had Sony cameras and they're really good. Now I have a Canon IXUS 120IS so I can vouch for Canon as well :)
Just don't go for any brand that isn't known for their cameras, like Samsung, Panasonic or anything like that - They always disappoint!

Actually Panasonic is not that bad... they got great reviews for their compacts. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q209grouplongzoom/page16.asp

Point taken on the Panasonic - But that doesn't mean all Panasonics are equally good :P

Yeah, I have a Samsung phone and Netbook, and both are really good, and tough. Sorry to hear the camera underperformed. Good on you for the donation.

Mind you, the 'old hacks' like Canon or Fuji or Nikon can't be beaten for cameras... they've got the good lenses and performance down pat.

I hadn't encountered a bad Samsung product before

My 1st and last encounter with Samsung wasn't even voluntary and it was bad: when my dad bought a *rolls eyes* "Sony" VHS VCR in 2001 (SLV-N750), the very year Sony stopped making VCRs themselves and started selling rebadged Samsungs. Total POS! The power supply in it was so crappy that for some reason the cable in the entire household went bad the second I plugged that VCR in the wall. I had to hunt down a discontinued Sony SLV-N50 in a flea market for my dad to get rid of that problem.

Samsung.... *barfs*

I'm quite fond of Samsung monitors... been using them forever and they serve others till this day even I got new models every few years. But I wouldn't buy a camera from any non-camera brand. And I don't even consider Sony a camera brand. For our mid-range segment of the market Canon and Nikon are the only ones I'd consider valid. Everything else I wouldn't touch. "Newcomers" can't offer the same quality at a competitive price. It's impossible. I've been using my Canon 300D ever since late 2004 and now the two batteries I got back then are starting to run out of power rather quick but I attribute that to age. They did fine in all sorts of situations back when they were new.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of Canon's stuff, too. I've always had good experiences, both with their SLRs and their little point-and-shoot models.

This is mine, and it did nicely at MFF. Only thing is it cannot zoom in and out while filming. I may have to Offload some things from it.

It has an internal battery, no AA's. The bane of my existence was AA's

Are you talking about a video camera or a stillshot camera... I got a couple of them that I'm very happy with...but they might be a bit out of your range.
