Tilton located a vid showing pet otters on a trip to a fish restaurant for otters! I guess they can be similar to ferrets as pets.
I remember when I was growing up, a local pet store did sell otters.. it was fun to watch them playing there :}
Never did know anyone who owned one though!

Well over 20 years ago a local wildlife rescue operation had two otter infants brought to it; their mother had been killed in a land clearing situation, and nobody knew how to care for the little ones (which didn't even have their eyes open yet).

Every bit as cute as newborn puppies and as even more helpless---and they had a light, spicy scent unlike the adults, which can be somewhat "skunky". (I was a newsman and got to spend a little time with the infants.) One survived to grow into adulthood and was released into the wild, where he lived free and happy for a number of years.

Nobody that I know of has ever made pets out of them, however. Leave it to the Japanese! };-)

Those appear to be Asian Small-clawed Otters. (and that's about as big as they'll get) A friend of mine owns a North American River Otter, (it's his second one), and he's a HANDFUL! Otters are very smart, resourceful, and they can be super destructive if they get bored. (which they do easily) Like Jim said, they can be smelly as adults. My friend's otter, Seemore, is descented and neutered, so while he's a bit musky, he's not so bad. He's also got a very sweet temprament. Still, he wouldn't recommend one as a pet for most folks. It's apparently a full-time job!

That is so awesome! I've never heard of keeping otters as pets, but I'd never be able to tear myself away from one if I had one. It would just be too adorable.
