Macintosh Misery.
Jan. 28th, 2007 04:23 pmOkay, I finally did it. :|
After putting it off and hoping for help and solutions that I knew were out there somewhere, I reluctantly listened to the nudges of "just reinstall the OS to fix it" , to get my system 9 driver problems fixed.
And so now... it has fixed nothing, ...but I have to face the additional drudgery of manually fixing all my settings to what they were. -_-
Thank goodness for backups. I've gone down the high-hopes road before with Mac.
Yes it broke my desktop.
It broke my printers.
It broke my internet connection.
And who knows what else... *huge weary sigh*
And *still* it didn't solve the problem of drivers that can recognize the fact that I have only one monitor, and that I would like to use graphics programs, and put the machine to sleep instead of turn it off. I can do none of these, and reinstalling the OS did not fix it.
Yes, I use system X. Yes I am a part of the converted crowd.
But after using something (pre-system X) for some 15 years *because* of its appeal, I don't understand the widespread urge to diss it altogether just because something new comes along. Can't they exist together? They do exist together, and I don't see anything wrong with liking my Classic programs.
Eudora Pro, ...fast and text-based, effectively stopping spam and junkmail images that are unwelcome.
Muddweller, ...clean and capable and fast.
And so many other programs.
So yes I use system X.
But it is so disheartening that hardly anyone really cares about system 9 ... and trying to get it to work right. Guess ya really can't blame 'em. Still, it'd be nice if the simple answers to fix it, were easy to find... :/

Date: 2007-01-29 03:10 am (UTC)Unfortunately even companies only support their products for so long.
Rest in Peace, OS 9.
The king is dead, long live the King X!
Although, if you're not using new hardware, the old drivers should be stable, so it's possible you have a hardware problem more than a software one.

Date: 2007-01-29 03:19 am (UTC)The Energy Saver, and Brightness Controls work fine in System X on this machine.
I will probably test Photoshop under system X, and if it works, I may just grudgingly operate it that way. There won't be any point to boot in 9 then, and the Apple Corporate Machine will have successfully beaten another victim into submission.

Date: 2007-01-29 08:31 am (UTC)I am talkin' 'bout Classic (as started up in), and also Classic in emulation under System X. Either way, I cannot run Classic Photoshops, tested on version 3 and version 4.
I can run system X native Photoshop CS, though the HD transfer from the 667mhz to the 800mhz machine does seem to have broken something, it still runs, but says some components are missing when I start it. That is probably unrelated to the issues with the Classic photoshop problems though. At least the mouse arrow doesn't freeze.

Date: 2007-01-30 09:06 pm (UTC)No worries, me friend... I alreddy haff PShop 7, .. all the PShops from 2.5 onward actually, thru CS (except 6, since I heard that was a lemon). ^V^
I did start using 2.5 in system 7.. LOL! The later ones are fine, yep... I just tend to like to get in there and get out fast when it comes to editing usually... and version 3 loads in like 1.5 seconds, and I can be outa there in 10.
For batch stuff or more compatible jpegs, version 4 does the trick nearly every time, too.
heh!.. Old habits die hard, ...especially when they keep workin' so well. :> But then again, very few people drive a 24 year old car they bought new... most folks just stare in awe and pat me on the back, sayin' "amazing, sir!" ... in detached puzzlement :D
