Okay, I finally did it. :|

After putting it off and hoping for help and solutions that I knew were out there somewhere, I reluctantly listened to the nudges of "just reinstall the OS to fix it" , to get my system 9 driver problems fixed.

And so now... it has fixed nothing, ...but I have to face the additional drudgery of manually fixing all my settings to what they were. -_-

Thank goodness for backups. I've gone down the high-hopes road before with Mac.

Yes it broke my desktop.
It broke my printers.
It broke my internet connection.
And who knows what else... *huge weary sigh*

And *still* it didn't solve the problem of drivers that can recognize the fact that I have only one monitor, and that I would like to use graphics programs, and put the machine to sleep instead of turn it off. I can do none of these, and reinstalling the OS did not fix it.

Yes, I use system X. Yes I am a part of the converted crowd.

But after using something (pre-system X) for some 15 years *because* of its appeal, I don't understand the widespread urge to diss it altogether just because something new comes along. Can't they exist together? They do exist together, and I don't see anything wrong with liking my Classic programs.
Eudora Pro, ...fast and text-based, effectively stopping spam and junkmail images that are unwelcome.
Muddweller, ...clean and capable and fast.
And so many other programs.

So yes I use system X.

But it is so disheartening that hardly anyone really cares about system 9 ... and trying to get it to work right. Guess ya really can't blame 'em. Still, it'd be nice if the simple answers to fix it, were easy to find... :/

Uh, Iggle. No offense, but you sound like someone lamenting stanley steamers when everyone else has moved on to flying cars. :)

I'm sorry you are having troubles keeping 9 above water. But once you start using 10 regularly, I think you will like it better. :)

no offense taken. appreciate the honesty really.

But yeah, I know.. that's why I feel so alone.. noone really gives a shit. Everyone is getting by alright, while I'm missing what I loved and lost. Can't really blame folks... ATI has no support for the system 9 drivers or it would be easy no sweat. So that's why I have to rely on friends/and/or serendipity of finding this stuff online.

The point you missed mebbe iand I tried to emphasize in this posting is that I *do* use X, but I like the option to use everything that I used before it also. This is also important and relevant to my job, but then, that's just my job, and noone has to give a shit about that either.. they don't have to face it. It's awright. I'll scrounge around on my own and somehow maybe I'll find them again, if they exist.

In other words, I do use the flying cars, but I still rev up the carburetted ones with the wheels now and then. I'm a nostalgic bird.

I'm starting to wonder, since this was the last machine bootable in 9, if ATI only supported Classic through X on the 800 machine, in which case I'd almost rather go back to a 667 machine (but it would need a video display that isn't broked). *wags*
I guess I won't know until I can find and install the appropriate update (radeon-0206.hqx according to Archive.Org) and see if it helps.

I guess part of what I'm trying to say (but just a sideline theme, not the direct issue), is that I can like CDs and iPods and iTunes, but it's okay to like phonograph records too.

I do realize that this is in the minority of thinking, because when something new comes along, most people do throw away what they knew before, their vinyl records.

I'm just not made of money, to restock my entire collection right away, whether it's for music, or for computer software, ...and that's why I have to buy used computer stuff from you guys.
