My macos x machine is a 400mhz powerbook, and after noting that .wmv files in particular are subject to many video freeze points, even while audio continues to play. I decided to research RAM disks for os x.
Supposedly the system will improve ram cache allocation by itself to files used more often, I didn't want to have to load it over and over and over, just to gain that advantage.
I found several options out there, and Esperance seems to work quite well. When played from a RAM disk, the video had no freezes as without it, even though a usual amount of jumpiness can be seen once in a while, typical of some video playback anyway.
If you like it, it's donationware, and I'm sure all youse dedicated folks support them hardworking programmers out there now and then. *wags*
