bye bye earthlink
May. 31st, 2023 11:33 amIn a long anticipated but bittersweet step, today I am cancelling my long-held Earthlink account, having had it for some 27 years.
Why?
A number of reasons...
- Massive amounts of Spam and not very good spam filters
- Continual raising of their prices
- Interference with my account (continually messing with my passwords)
Those are the main reasons. I have already missed (for a while) some other things about having a 'classic' internet account.... it used to have dial-up access and web space, which all olden-day internet accounts had. I'd already phased those out.
It also was nice to be registered as C Eagle, which might not be too easy to attain these days, since just about everything requires a cel phone or the like to register.
But... it will be one less expense, having gone from $27 a month for a full fledged account, then to $5 for an email only account some years ago, which they have now more than doubled and continues to rise... for something I don't even use any more...
So, .. goodbye Earthlink!

Date: 2023-06-01 01:05 am (UTC)In 2008 I finally dropped my old dial-up isp: IDS. Verizon had put fiber optic lines by the house and I was tired of the 33K connection my 56K modem was pulling. When I called the company to cancel they couldn’t find my account even though I was automatically debited monthly for access.
“What’s your account number?”
“I don’t have one. Look me up: tj@ids.net”
“That’s not in our database… blah blah blah we’ll look into it”
I dropped the debit card so they couldn’t bill me anymore, and three months later the account was deactivated.
Good luck then :o)
