Paypal and Yelp
Sep. 15th, 2022 11:21 pmThose two companies are currently on my $#!^ list for overbearing, or untested, or invasive programming and policies. *grrrrrr*
I recently discovered that Yelp is soooooooooo overprogrammed that it does not allow writing of reviews anymore except with the very latest browser(s). I had to load Edge to get the review U.I. to work. With my standard Chrome (from 2020) it just shows you the User Interface, but nothing works... clicking on the star ratings, typing in the review field... nothing. In cases like this, I have to turn to my Work machine, which I keep tortured with all the very latest software jive.
And then Paypal... gack. This is a policy/combo/programming debacle.
They now *require* a phone number from a finite list of providers... and GoogleVoice (which I use) is not one of them. So to check one's account activity, it won't let you in unless you add one of their chosen numbers. So I can still buy things, so far, but I just can't make changes to my account for now.
Just for giggles, I even let their "processing" endless loop run when I went to sleep, but it looks like it overloaded my swap file and crashed the computer after about 8 hours ;/
Both of the above companies are cited with lots of complaints via the intarnetz. I couldn't find specifics on the Yelp issue, but there are plenty of other gripes, and their help system is no party either.
The Paypal one *does* have thousands of complaints about the specific issue though, which apparently has been going on for nearly a year. Their useless phone support yielded nothing, except forcing me to change my password several times... nor did any of the people on the line offer *any* knowledge of getting around this dilemma. It appears at least for now that Paypal has no desire to keep anyone around who does not submit a cel phone number for their rape-fest.

Date: 2022-09-17 06:39 am (UTC)And it's funny you should mention html... ever since GoogleMail's code changes in June, I've been having to use their old HTML page in order to reply to *most* messages!!
This is because the email customization box that used to appear on the bottom right just appears somewhere in the ether, .. no U.I. in which to send the message!
Luckily I can start a reply and it registers one in Drafts, then I switch to html to complete and send the message(s).

Date: 2022-09-16 03:48 pm (UTC)I've been finding that I have to use Safari on my iPad to get sites to accept input into fields requiring... input! Some of this is probably because of my ad-blockers on FF, otherwise, who knows? At work I had to switch to Chrome because AdBlocker Ultimate on FF also disabled a lot of input ability. Heh, whenever I have problems with a site I just move around from browser to browser...
Maybe I'm the only person among my contacts here who likes PayPal (if you send this post to DW you may get a reaction from a squirrely squirrel there). I've used them for a decade or more without incident and haven't noticed any restrictions with security. My only problem with PP is that when I'm window shopping the web, I'm more likely to make a bad decision and buy something unnecessary if the site has their payment option!

Date: 2022-09-17 06:50 am (UTC)Gotta say I do get summa the warmfuzzies when I hear of someone using the same strategies... such as using different browsers to handle different tasks.
Sorry to hear the coding anarchy has struck you as well.... :P
WHen it comes to ad blockers, I've usually gone with script blockers, because they tend to give more control. However I did finally have to relent to using one when occasionally watching Y.T. with it. This is because it just got too crazy and disrespectful of viewers.... but interrupting at very bad moments, questionable content, and perhaps worst of all (imho) ads that are LONG LONG LONG... 10 seconds is ideal, but anything over 2 minutes is just INSANE.
oh! And I *do* love using Paypal... I use it a lot!... which is why it stings all the more that they have put in this new bad policy/vicious code that prevents people from logging in to their account/preferences.
I can still use it to buy things most of the time, unless this recent phone call incited someone their to ruin that too... we'll see... I haven't needed it the past few days, so I'll see next time I guess.
But yeah... Paypal itself has been great and even got a refund for me once when someone stole several hundred dollars by not delivering the purchased item(s).

Date: 2022-09-22 07:28 am (UTC)I did test it with another purchase a few days ago, and luckily that is still working. Will just have to use their phone assist I guess if I need to check or make changes to the profile.. at least until somebody sues them and they back off of this policy :P
ah Yelp... wow, it has really helped me find good local technicians. I just use my email to sign in though... I don't like that "sign in with FBook" on any site! Seems kinda prying...
