A few moments ago, my cel phone service finally told me they will be cancelling me if I don't trash my phone in two weeks. ;P

They've been writing me messages for quite a while with scare tactics about Upgrade Deals, but this is the first time they have mentioned cancellation. It's a pretty good deal and I'd rather not lose it ($30/mo unlimited everything, MetroPCS)

Those previous messages did prompt me to go in to one of their stores, TWICE, to check on deals. Both times I was told that my phone would probably be fine. The whole beef was that they are ceasing the 2G and 3G services (which are crappy anyway), but... my phone DOES work on 4G so I was told it should be fine.

The other thing that kept me away was that, in order to get the new deals, they wanted to confiscate my nice old phone... which is actually pointless and ridiculous.

So... if the cancellation thing is true, I guess the remaining option is to just get one of their approved phones and keep my old one (for the stuff on it), and just pay a little bit more since I'm not surrendering my old one for the crusher.

*sigh* Mixed feelings. Sure a new phone might be nice, but I'll miss my dependable, comfortable old Alcatel phone.

EDIT:
Well, I went to the cel store for a third time, and thankfully things were much better than my first two visits. The nice attendant there did not covet my lovely 8 year old phone in order to get a newer one, so *whew*
Went ahead and got the Moto G Power. Was still $124 to switch over, but it coulda been hundreds more, and this seems like a decent phone, even though it's nearly twice the size of my Alcatel Fierce ;P

The new phones these days are impressive. Once you start using a new one, I bet you'll like it.

Ah yep!.. Indeedy I've been using a new cel phone exclusively as a work account for a little over a year, .. they're a bit faster that's for sure, and a number of things are better, although it's a bit of a drag that my provider no longer has reasonably small phones, ..I had to get one of the big-almost-tablet-size ones, which is a drag when trying to figure out how to tote it. I know most of "the kids these days" just use their pocket, but that is so uncomfortable. I usually use a cel holster, and will likely be looking for some choices.

Sounds like it mostly worked out, so yay for that!

I need to visit the store myself, as my bill is getting kinda out of control lately. Same with cable. :-|

Yesh, well mostly yup :>
I still haven't looked into ways to stop all the notifications garbage, and the darn thing is so huge it's MUCH easier to drop, so... I've dropped it much much more than the previous phone.
Good luck with yours too...

A friend of mine (on AT&T) is pretty bummed about this as well. She and her mother still have the old "dummy" phones — as well as a plan from 2004 that was $10/month with some minimal amount of talk time, but they kept buying text messages in bundles of 1000. Seems to have worked pretty well for the last 18 years!

Eeeep... sorry to hear of it.... are they going to have to change their phones, and if so, can they at least keep that great plan?
