I've been exploring different flameless, battery-powered candles, both for aesthetic accent, and to reduce the need for turning on the main electricity-sucking light bulbs as often. From this journey, I've picked up at least 4 different brands of them, and they vary widely as to performance 8| ... It's not like paper clips or t-shirts, where most of them are mostly the same.

The first one was a 3 inch tall one from Amazon branded lamplust.com .. haha.. but this has been the best so far! It's amazingly made of REAL wax, has one of the most convincing flickers, and uses two C size batteries for the longest endurance. All of the candles I'm mentioning have a timer, and this one has the either "ON" or 6 hour timer option. The only problem with real wax is that one of them did get a bit of a dent on the bottom when, being so waxy, it slipped out of my wing.

The next was a candlestick style made by General Electric, which uses two AA batteries. This I found at Big Lots and it has the worst of all the flickers. It also only has a 5 hour timer option (no purely ON only switch). The flicker is more like a strobe, so I don't like it at all. I took the unopened one back to the store for a refund, and put the opened one outside in a vase, so it looks sort-of ok to passers by.
I got several other plastic candlestick style ones from LampLust also, and while being nearly identical to the G.E. one, the flicker is much better, though not as convincing as the wax one, but sufficient. These are also timer-only.

The 3rd foray into these was at Target, a brand named inglowflamelesscandles.com The site says they have the real wax ones also, but the Target store ones were not, even though they looked near identical to the LampLust ones. Commendably, they also have a very convincing flicker too, though they cost 3 or 4 dollars cheaper than the real wax ones. They use three AAA batteries, so supposedly that will be less duration than the C size ones, however it's nice to know there's a place where I can just go pick these up if needed, rather than wait via online ordering and shipping. They also have the "ON" or 5 hour timer options.

The last try at these was at WalMart, via the Westinghouse brand. These were 3 in-a-box for the price of one of the LampLust ones. Alas, the flicker in these is marginally tolerable, though not as bad as the G.E. ones. It also uses AAA batteries again. I do find it odd that the most well-known established brands (Westinghouse and General Electric) made the absolute worst flicker circuits in this study ;P However this particular circuit has the most options, oddly enough, in timer settings. You can switch it fully "ON" or use the Variable Timer to get them to run for an hour or up to 23 hours at a time. Too bad the effect is rather lame, but at least it's passable.

Given a choice, I'll be getting the LampLust or InGlow Target ones if I do get any more, though I think I've got enough to keep the ambiance going for a while :> *tailwags*

Thanks for the review. I like candle light but I love scented candles so I don't get to enjoy it very often.

Oh yep, those are very nice ^v^ ... Some of the electronic ones are scented too.. and I love the real ones also but they do cost as much as the electronic ones, but they burn down to gone... so I use these new ones for everyday more-often usage, and will use the traditional ones for special occasions.

I've got some of the General Electric ones that I bought for Christmas use, but ended up keeping them out for nightlights. I kind of like the weird flickering, myself :)

hehheh!... yeh, the G.E. ones were at least passable, so that's why I kept one and use it in the little lamp chimney on the porch... One thing I haven't found yet is how long all of these will last... so maybe if I get some data on that down the line, I will post it too.. ^V^

Conveniently enough, I've had two of mine running on the same batteries since the first of December or so. I set them out for Christmas decoations, then decided to just leave them out for nightlights. Because it wasn't an experiment, I didn't take care to use new batteries. IIRC, one of them had batteries that I took out of a flashlight, since I only had two new ones.

The one in my bathroom (which I presume to be that one) is almost dead, now. It comes on weakly, at the beginning of the night, flickers for a half hour or so, then stops and goes dark. After a bit, it'll restart, but the light is extremely dim. It brightens and dims sporadically. At the dimmest part of the cycle, you can only see it in complete darkness. Oddly enough, it keeps its timing cycle. I'm interested to see how that eventually fails, so I'm leaving it sit.

The other one in my bedroom, which probably had the new batteries, is noticably dimmer, but otherwise continues to work as normal.

If I wanted them to work normally and brightly, I think changing the batteries every three months would suffice.

How convenient! I was recently thinking of getting some electric candles for much the same reasons. I saw one outside a home here that was huge: like 18"+ tall and about 8" wide. VERY effective flicker and glow. I wonder if these were wax also?

The differences in what I'm looking for: not-wax, but wax-appearing (gets too hot around here for real wax); daily timer (24 hour); AC cord/plug. I'd like to have something I can put on my front porch that looks like a real candle, is fairly large and won't melt. Plus, cord: so that it will just go on every night. If you come across something like this-- let me know!

Ah yep! Pretty certain I saw one of those super tall non-wax ones at Target too! I don't think it had a plug though... most of these things are battery or solar-charge powered. I did buy some house-current candle-style lights as well, but none of the flicker-lamp type so far. Their candles are in two sections, the regular candle/lighting section, and also a different bunch in patio gear.
Hey btw... did you get my text a couple weeks ago about the puppet exhibition? (now past)

p.s. I didn't see THIS (http://www.lamplust.com/candle_finder.php?cftag=100) candle search at the actual lamplust site before, since I ordered from Amazon originally...

As far as your main light bulbs. perhaps switching to CFLs and such to reduce your energy on the bulbs, if you're concerned? That said, I can see the battery-powered candles for a certain style.
