Well, not totally terror.. but disappointment.
A Macintosh incident, for those interested in those kinda things..
I do like pre-system-X stuff, and still run system 9 because it is fairly solid and trouble-free, and I don't have to buy all new system-X programs.
Until now, there were only a couple things that weren't up to par in sys-9 for me.. the limits on making alias icons, and the fact that 3 of my older programs from system-8 wouldn't run.
The biggest annoyance began with trying the Nomad MuVo MP3 drive on this system, which broke my card recognition for the digital camera compact flash.
The worst of it was that it made some sort of hidden change, and basic fixes like trashing the preferences didn't fix it.
Now this is a warning for any other unsuspecting users... I just found a case where trashing the preferences file causes an irreparable effect. :/
I *think* that MuVo also ruined the Prefs for my Menu Options Control Panel, since the Recent items have not been updating for a few months, seemingly also around the time I tried that MuVo. ;P
So today just outa curiosity, I tried to fix it..
...mainly because I saw that recent items are tracked in the General Control Panel in system-X, so I thought I'd peek back at that Panel in system-9 to see if it was there too... nope... so I checked the docs and it said that is handled by the Menu Options one... but, it wouldn't open, saying that the prefs were meesed up.
"Ah," thinkest I.. "trash the ole prefs and that should fix it.. almost always worked before..." *fluffles out feathers*..
So I trash 'em and hey.. the Control Panel opens and seems to work again... but HEY!!!!!.... suddenly about half of my Apple Menu Items have vanished into thin air!! >:|
Now usually when something like this happens, it just means they've been invisibled or tossed in the trash... so I dig dig dig.... nope... no avail. :<
I wondered if it might be a virus.. but after running a few different virus check progs, seems not.... *scratches headcrest plumes*
Not knowing why, and seeing my program shortcuts disappear like dat sure got me depressed... :/ ... but then after a while I remembered I have a backup, so I will peek into that to locate (and rebuild from scratch) my shortcuts....
But. I think the way system-9 views aliases/shortcuts seems to allow for this unprecedented ability of initiating non-approved deletions... Maybe they aren't considered files at all in system-9... *bleah*
I'm not sure why it left the ones it did, and struck away the others... but jes thought putting this info out there might help someone else avoid the woe.
Backup. and make notes before changin' system settings.
And be aware that the ole trash-the-prefs may not be as benign a step as it once was, in some cases.
Best Wishes!

Date: 2003-10-17 02:20 am (UTC)I own a USB --> Bluetooth dongle, and for the 3-4 months I've owned it, I've only had it working for a total of two days. The software is simply not compatable with the software required to download to my phone. :-/ And since my phone's only way to upload/download info (photos, video, etc) is through bluetooth or infra-red... I'm rather irked. :-/ Even with the new laptop, it won't bloody work, and so I wasted $50+ on the stupid thing (which I would bet money will work for general use, but not with my cell phone), and arg. *pounds head on desk*
I feel your pain. :-/

...ghastly stuff :P
Date: 2003-10-17 03:29 am (UTC)Wow... well, I don' really feel better to hear you suffered too, but it does feel good in some way when we share and relate similar trevails, indeedy... *ruffles tails and warbles*
I'm sorry to hear that happened ..something similar, to you too... :/ Reminds me of the time I tried to install a CD burner on a WIN95 machine.. nowhere did they say it was only WIN98 compatible.. and it destroyed my entire UBS system...
Luckily the techs were able to walk me thru fixin it...
I have dredged up the effort to call the MuVo people about what their thing did.. but mebbe someday I will. I just have resolved not to use it on this machine again..
So sorry about the dongle.. *scritches and pats you consolingly..* Maybe eBay will help you get some of the money back... :|
Thank you for the kind comment too *warbles.. n fuzzles ya..*

Worth a shot. *Shrugs*

Date: 2003-10-20 12:36 am (UTC)Actually I run Mozilla a lot *warble*
...mostly when I need to update LiveJournal, since it crashes IE.
yeah, ain't no pop-ups great?
The main reason for getting NeScape updated was to use the Composer feature now and then (which was crashing for me). It has a great Tableize feature, to which I have found no equal!
As for regular surfing, I use iCab mostly :>

Rather sorry to hear about all the confuffle you had in trouble-shooting your Macintosh and trying to make your programs work. (Eeek!)
Hopefully all is running smoothly -- without a loss of too many feathers due to a stress molt! *snugs*

Seriously, who thought of adding a separate Servers folder to put (read: hide) servers that users were using when the computer crashed, but it never cleans itself out? The system is getting too sneaky for its own good hiding files where they shouldn't belong! Back to AppleShare Prep I say! dO:

Date: 2003-10-17 08:39 pm (UTC)those who keep lil' Billy Gates in beans & jeans,
I can only guess at how catastophic your incident
was, Mr. Eagle sir. My aforementioned beloved,
Shirlee, *is* a Mac user (she speaks of her iMac
thus: "it is NOT an iMac... it is MY iMac!") and
after letting her look at your post, she says
that's why she backs up everything before she
even thinks of installing anything new. She also
wishes you luck as "a OS 9 holdout... I held out
for as long as I could." Mind you, I'm just
passing on her comment - I have no real idea
what that means, although I *think* it's the
same thing as why I'm still on Win98.
(Oh, and in case I didn't say so before, I'm
VERY honored that you liked my pic of you well
enough to use as an LJ icon!^_^)
'sawright, mew dude!
Date: 2003-10-17 11:58 pm (UTC)Stayin' with a known element that *works* is part of why I've stayed with 9 too.. :>
...and Thank YOU for the great character interpretation that is so purrrfect as an icon too!! *hugs thanks again*
