heh! Well, I've been wanting to unwind a little bit, though not quite ready and up to being fully social out there at the moment again just yet, so, what to do.... hmm.. ah!... I finally broke down and checked out that nutty Toontown Online thing.... anybody else tried this? I don't recall hearing anyone talk about it...
It was interesting for a few hours.... :D
You can be a dog, a cat, a mouse, bunny, monkey or duck... (guess which!).. I think you can also be a pig or a .. was it a goat? I don't recall... ya hardly see anything other than the first few...
It runs from an Active-X sorta thing (not sure how on Macs), and it ran well enough for me to get around for a while, until I tried to go into my house. Could not get it to run, so I went to the other computer to try some other ideas... got it going again and past that... but it was starting to get a bit old by then... LOL :D
You basically go around and pick up points by doing some tasks, and then defeating Cogs, which are basically people dressed and acting like the Disney manager look... (LOL again!)...
The main frustrating thing tho was not the troubles with the vid card or compatibilities I got thru those eventually... but not being able to TALK fully... heheh! I can see it's needed there... lots of people swearing would really dim the experience, but heh... the censorship doesn't make it much better. It's funny at first... if you say a non-approved word, even something innocent (you can't say numbers) depending on your species, you will Quack or Squeak or Grrr or Meow... ;> The sounds were pretty hilarious!
Maybe it'd be better to not show the chat bubble at all, or.. have some sort of live delayed editing instead, or a feedback window to help you converse (they do have some preset phrases), ...but in just a few hours I did see some twinks trying to ruin things... so I guess they need something... One person was telling me they had been there two years and it was a bit expensive if you get keen stuff, like extra AV actions and facial expressions...
heh... Here's a pic I took...

Any thoughts? *hehheh!* I probably won't go back, ... I deleted the files from my comp because it was messin' with my safe surf settings...

Date: 2011-04-23 12:57 pm (UTC)The trouble is, it never really knows who it wants as its audience. It's obviously designed for kids, but it has way, way too much MMORPG "level grinding" to be interesting to little kids. And figuring out which gag tracks to skip is a pretty sophisticated decision that a little kid Just. Wouldn't. Get.
I suspect they wanted to make it All Ages, but as you discovered, it just doesn't quite work like that.
Eggcellent Summary, Sir!
Date: 2011-04-23 10:08 pm (UTC)I actually just went to Youtube and looked at some 'later' scenarios (which I didn't think of beforehand), and some of that stuff does look more interesting..
You've done great at pondering the target audience for it... I suppose I might have stayed longer if I had a more compatible computer system... but I think other things will keep me sufficiently busy for now.
Did you see that Boss Eagle in the game? And the robot cogs? That was an added surprise :D
Re: Eggcellent Summary, Sir!
Date: 2011-04-23 11:58 pm (UTC)One other note. Unlike most MMORPGs, Toontown rewards you quite richly for taking an 'unselfish' path for your gags. The Trap gags have to be done in conjunction with the Lure gags -- and the combination is the most devastating in the game. And EVERYONE wants someone who specializes in Toon Ups when they go hit a Cog HQ. Those gags are the difference between making it to the boss and not.
So kudos to them for getting alot of things right, and avoiding alot of MMORPG traps. Unfortunately, it can't avoid the biggest one of all - time-sink level grinding.

Date: 2011-04-24 07:55 am (UTC)I may give it another try sometime when I update computers, but with my current system (the latest being around 2008), I think I will probably watch from the sidelines for a bit.... :}
