One of the sets I've been meaning to watch for a couple years is the 'sequel' series to Tezuka's Hinotori film (which I'd bought but hadn't watched).

heh.. It can be frustrating watching Tezuka stuff... I love so many of the designs, they are quite riveting.. especially of the anthro characters (while many of the humans are quite grotesque).. but a great many of the characters in the stories are very idiotic and shallow. ;P People not asking questions when they could ask questions... people assuming stuff and then launching into childish battles... needless tortures and selfishnesses... Verrrry Frustrating... and watching the first set of the series was Very Boring.

But then around chapter 8, along came a wolf anthro character... (ch 9) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwLKufLVp7o

If you like Tezuka designs and haven't seen this, it might be worth checking out.

Funny thing though... for a series called "Phoenix"... you really don't see a whole lot of the phoenix... there's like a cameo in each chapter, but as the phoenix itself claims, it's "only there to observe"...

The thing to realize about the Phoenix is that she's a metaphor for the Buddhist concept of death and rebirth -- the original manga was drawing very heavily on Buddhist folklore and tradition.

She's also a living MacGuffin; all the main character are pursuing her for her blood, but a recurrent theme is that they have no idea what 'immortality' really means, and ultimately they learn through their own pursuit.

That being said, she's beautifully designed and I wish that she'd had a much more active role in the proceedings.

I think I remember that part from the manga series-- I had no idea they animated them! Thanks!

Does the animated series also cover the second and (I think there were three) third parts of this story, where the wolf-headed character is a gangster?

I'll have to check it out!

The only thing I never quite liked about his work was the way females always looked very different. My brother had a few of his comics, and the stories never had too much of a happy ending unfortunately.

Yer welcome... and tanx!

I've skimmed most of it now, and I don't recall seeing any of that... there's the wacky oddly-placed outer space and robot stuff though! :D
