Deja Vu - Music and Visual Art
Jun. 9th, 2010 01:14 amI say deja vu because I know I've thought about this before... but I'm not sure I've written it down.
Art is a great big category of creative mediums... writing, music, visual art, performances, etc... but, they use different parts of our brains... more.. or less..
I keep wanting to discuss music, but I've got to reach acceptance that music is a really different type of art, that just doesn't lend itself as easily to discussion, from what I've seen/heard. Unless you're in specifically musical circles of course. But why?...
I think that major reason (to compare the apparent favorites here) is that visual art is an Impact thing, whereas music is an Experiential thing.
We can all relate (or not) to a piece of art nearly the moment we see it. We can dig deeper if we like, but usually we can tell how we feel about it very quickly.
With music, you have to sit through it and experience it... which also can change, depending on how and when we experience it.. what mood we're in, what is happening at the moment, and whether it is considered background or central to what we're doing.
This is where it's both a blessing and a curse with some, like me, who have musical neurons stitched all around our brains... we can experience it in ways many might not be able to, and maybe even produce it in ways completely unique... but we can't always discuss or share moments with others about music, even though the desire is deep to do so...
I do feel blessed that I can immerse myself in visual arts, too... and thank heavens there are so many phenomenal arteeests out there... whenever I feel I have to come out of my audio cocoon, I can share artistic nurturing with so many amazing visual talents... as we all Impact each other, in hopefully beautiful ways...
(whether or not the soundtrack is on or not....) ^v^ .
