Jan. 3rd, 2010 06:38 amAlrighty...
My ISP webmail (which is what I usually prefer) is all broke tonight, and it's a new year, so ...can't read it online... figured it was time to local backup my 3,000 email messages for 2009 anyway..
Now ..*blushes*... here's the fun ;D
I use almost alla the newfangled stuff mosta the time, but for backups, I still figure the old tried-n-true is best... so I backup my email to good ole Eudora PRO.... version 2 .. ... on an ole Classic system 9.1 mac .. ^v^
*ducks and waits until the chortles and razzberries subside*... ;D
Hold on a sec... heh.. now hey... it puts alla attachments neatly in a folder... it only reads text so it can't get virususses.. and it's not impossible to read from any text program... not bad, eh? *wincy, pleading eyes and sheepish grin...*
It can only pick up mail, since it doesn't support my ISP send protocols anymore, heh, so uh... that is one downer... but since I always use webmail (or Entourage/Outlook/Thunderbird if needed) to send, it's not rilly an issue.
Thot I'd take this opera tunity to show you me ole mac snapshot, from waaaaaaaay back... when you could still have fun with icons on folders n stuff...
(and thanks lots for yer responses to me last entry!... okay, here's the snapshot!...

^v^

Date: 2010-01-03 04:55 pm (UTC)So, MacMaster Eagle: I'm on OSX (Panther? Snowleopard?) and I use Google Mail (Gmail)-- what would you suggest to back this up? I'd love to have all of my old emails the way Eudora Pro 2 does for you: with attachments in a separate folder, etc. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the input, meeester dragon!
Date: 2010-01-04 03:13 am (UTC)Say, wodda u do about LDIF/LDAP/VCARD import/export limitations in MacMail? I was about to make an entry about it.. (might still do it...)
We used Thunderbird to midwife a delimited output file from Outlook, to make a LDIF so we could import it to Mail, ...but even though Thunderbird is an email program, it converted all the info Except Email Data.. LOL!
I don't really wanna haveta use a Perl script to convert the delimited data file if I don't haveta... I only have access to a few shells and I'm not sure what the support level is on those for CGI etc...

Date: 2010-01-04 03:07 am (UTC)Eudora 1.5 Lite I believe is what I used before Eu 2, and it's essentially the same thing except you can't reset the status on some items, like if it marks an item Read or Replied it stays that way. It's just a dot.
One must have a Classic environment to run it though, and (I don't recall) if this is one of those programs that prefers/needs to run in Classic startup environment (only older machines still do that).
You can try it under the Classic emulator, just be sure that you go to the Options/Prefs and Leave Mail On Server, so just in case it doesn't download correctly, it will still be there online.
Here's a place that has Eudora 1.3 ... http://www.euronet.nl/users/mvdk/communication.html
This place has a lot more http://www.oldversion.com/Eudora.html ... recommend 1.5.2
Later free versions of Eudora have ads, but I don't remember when it starts...
Here's a big reference manual
http://www.rtis.com/nat/user/toolbox/oldmacs/MacEudoraManual/
The inbox/outbox and attachments will all be setup in a Eudora Folder in the Classic System Folder. Then what I do is I transfer each year to a new mail folder, and then I can clear out the inbox and start a new year! I don't need to back up out/sent boxes anymore since I can't send messages with it using my ISP. (My sent messages I cc to another Earthlink account from webmail, so they become inbox messages there for archiving separately.)
Anymore questions, feel free to give me a holler!
