I have an HP laptop that doesn't wake from sleep when devices are plugged in/out of the ports, but I have a Gateway that does. It's really sorta stupid that it does. This means when I unplug the mouse moving it from one comp to the other, I always have to put the Gateway back to sleep (unless I want to just let it drift off after a while using its battery up), but the HP doesn't require this useless babysitting.

Is this something that can be changed somewhere, or is it just a fluke specific to some computers?

I'd check the BIOS for a "Wake on ____" setting, where ____ is something like device or USB. Not Wake on LAN, however.

I don't know, but my MacBook does the same thing.

You might see if there's a BIOS setting that controls what devices can wake the machine. Maybe it's set so it can be woken by a USB keyboard or something, which means it'd have to wake up to figure out what's plugged into it when that changes.

You can change that in Windows "Allow USB devices to wake the computer from sleep"
