really feeling bad for my buddies (and lotsa other folks) using Windows right now... this RPC shutdown worm has made it to the top story on the news, where they say it might even affect around 50% of the computers in use WORLDWIDE :(

if you don't have a mac, you might wanna ZOOM to the microsoft security update site to get the fixes. apparently the viciousness of this thing doesn't even require email or a pop-up... it simply sneaks in through an open port, which they say is generally #135. A firewall -could- possibly prevent this, but I've already heard of a half dozen people I know who have gotten it. (deeeeep thanks to [livejournal.com profile] yoru for the initial posting about this)

when I went to help two people fix this things today, we get to the microsoft site, and after okaying the updates, the computer just sits there... which I'm assuming is because the whole world is trying to update right now :| We left the computer on overnight in the office, in hopes that tomorrow the update will be there.

if you get this, at least the RUN -> SHUTDOWN /A command seems to abort the worm poison for one session once the dialog box hits, but the computer still operates sluggishly.

best wishes you all.. I am not gonna start my Windows machine for a *long* time, until I hear this is over. :/

A hardware firewall will protect, as long as it doesn't route the access to the windowcomputer (as many set it up to do)... It doesnt affect Mac's , true, but it doesnt affect Linux box'es either.. *pheow*

A software firewall could possibly let this virus pass, because the bug is in the OS.

I've got both a NAT router and a software firewall running on my machine. No way anything from the internet is going to connect to port 135 on this machine! I also patched the security hole yesterday and updated my virus signatures...just to be sure. ;>

I'll just route port 135 to one of the Qubes. Let's see what it can do with that.

most "connection sharing" NAT's has built in firewall. They would work much better
than a software firewall and has gotten relatively cheap...

Hummm... I wonder if this is what is going on with my moms computer... her computer kind of took a dump at one time.

Love and hugs!

Chahala.

PS: My systems are behind a firewall.

I'm not at my home computer, but I wanted to tell ya I should be back in the area about Friday, so I'll give you a poke then. My mother is insisting on a two day trip to Catalina, so I'll be out for a few. O_o Take care dear Eagle. :)

I installed the patch yesterday on my XP box and then started X-Plane right back up again and went back to flying around. Stuck it on a Win2k box here at work that has a firewall on it -- so it didn't have the virus anyway but you never know. The NT4 box isn't liable to get it. No firewall as the software we have here won't work on NT4. Argh.

But I love our Macs!

For whatever reason, this work has the entire planet hitting the MS Update site that it's effectively non-functional.

People can DL the patch from here and install it manually (very easy to do that)instead:

Hahaha! I am running Windows, and I'm immune to that virus! Woo, 98!
