Version Ponderings
Jul. 4th, 2009 05:34 pmI have to wonder sometimes why there are so many different versions of a song or an album, or both. For instance, the Enya song "Book of Days"... different versions AND album art! The original song was only in gaelic, and subsequent ones with english added...

This is another album which seemed to have a different version every time I walked in the store! And not just the images, but the packaging changed a lot as well, inner sleeve stuff, embossing on the cover, etc. It's a great album too! At least the music different change on this one...

Here another album for which I personally remember being several unexplained different covers...

Other songs that I can think of just off the top of my head which have different versions in circulation, are Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple (the oddity with this is that an alternate take is the one we usually hear these days, not the original hit version). The alternate take is okay, but I'd like to have the original more easy to find as well.
One that is an example of insanity in song changes is Beast of Burden by The Rolling Stones (the record company edited two measly bars out of the song intro, which TOTALLY ruins it for me. I say measly because I can't see ANY GOOD REASON for taking those out.
There are plenty of other examples, some good too... like some alternate versions of Beatles' songs made available on those three big compilations a few years back, but I don't wanna go all tl:dr on ya, so I'll end it here.. I hope it was an enjoyable read ^v^ .

Date: 2009-07-05 02:30 am (UTC)I just saw the differmint versions coming out over and over, I never did buy another copy, so I didn't know.... wow!
I do remember reading that Hall and Oates were both very tweaked about the earlier versions of this album, so I think as their clout increased with sales, they had more choice with input down the line...
o' course that might not apply to some of the content ;P We've all seen that "manager malaise" affect things too... yipes!

Date: 2009-07-19 02:37 am (UTC)I remember there are several USA versions of "Rio" by Duran Duran, first on Harvest Records with the original UK mix, then re-released on Capitol Records with extended dance remixes of several songs.

Date: 2009-07-05 02:35 am (UTC)btw...re: those recent Knack posts I've made... gotta say I'm torn again on the group 8|
Loved the first two albums, then years later I bought "Serious Fun" which stank.. so I stayed away for a while...
Then somehow about a month ago I came across some songs that sounded promising, and bought two more albums (Normal as the Next Guy, and Live from the Rock and Roll Fun House) and have been loving them!... which... unfortunately gave me the courage/illusion that their third album might be good and something I missed, so I just bought "Round Trip" this week... El Stinko. ;P
So I'm back to wondering why their different albums are so uneven... (still like those four and not those other two though! I guess a 2 to 1 average isn't tooooooo bad....) ;>

Date: 2009-07-05 11:29 pm (UTC)Noooo!!! All this build up and no Beatle trivia! Awwwww... :(
Voices: the real cover is the last link. :-)
Alternate versions: I've never been able to locate the single version of Queen's Radio Ga Ga on CD or even MP3 so far. They put their longer LP version in their compilations.

Date: 2009-07-06 06:21 am (UTC)I didn't know that about Ga-Ga!... Always good to pool information for the comprehensive knowledge of teengs ^V^ *wags* I will keep my eyes peeled for that!
In times like those I check out eBay and Amazon and random other search engine finds... sometimes even YouTube can help. In fact the people here on LJ helped me find almost half the Hawaiian songs I was looking for a while back, and YouTubers helped me find the other half... woot!
