A few days ago I wrote about having problems with wi-fi, and earlier I mentioned the battery seeming to be related to display problems.
Well, tonight the computer just suddenly went ZAP! and shut off while I was just typing, nothing unusual. First time that's happened. So the motherboard, not the battery, may have been the culprit all along, and now rearing its pesky hide with even more impending fervor...

HP has already mailed me the Return Merchandise Authorization box, but I've just been putting off my backup and sending... cuz I don't look forward to being without the machine for 2 or 3 weeks, and of course even though backups almost always work, there's always a smidge of trepidation when wiping one's drive...

Anyways, new backup is done, so I s'pect I'll pack it up tomorrow or Tuesday... *chews on wing*

I had an IBM laptop that would do that, and it turned out to be a short in the power adapter cord. It turns out on some Thinkpads a short in the external power connection will instantly shut the machine down instead of allowing it to switch to battery.

ah yesh... :}
Welp, it loox like I'll be on my ThinkPad for a couple o' weeks... spent all evening finishing the backup/delete and packing up the machine... I was urged on by the brand new problem of sudden-shutdown I encountered last night, which seems like another motherboard-related thing.. so hopefully the fix will take care of everything, not just the wi-fi.
