arrrgh... seems like many of the ones I've bought new, do..
I've been having trouble with my wi-fi switch, and was very frustrated recently, trying to remember if I disabled it... but I couldn't find any evidence of that, or notes which I take when I make changes... so I researched it and it turns out it IS a motherboard problem with my HP model ;P
Had a (known issue recall) motherboard problem with an Apple G3 laptop a few years ago too... they were very friendly when they fixed it, but after it failed again 4 months later, they were like, "...and who are you?"
Apple's warranty for the free fix was only 90 days, but this known-issue free fix will add an additional 24 months to my warranty for this item, so that's kinda nice. It's a drag that they want the HD too, so I'll haveta backup and wipe that... rarrgh bleh.
They are sending a nice box, an RMA and free Fedex shipping both ways, so we'll see how this goes. Seems like a lotta trouble for a wi-fi switch :>
I'd been having some trouble with the display coming up blank after waking it from sleep also, but it turned out that is an anomaly with the battery circuitry, so when the battery starts failing, it affects the screen.. and just taking it out or replacing it fixes that. Updating the BIOS caused a fail-to-startup-loop, so that wasn't so good. So it may be two weeks without this thingy... rarrgh again.
and as always, I hope this helps some folks out there who might be experiencing similar issues.
Here's the RMA link by the way... http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01087277&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3444107 .
