I hope Barack isn't blowin' it already... ;/
While I'm willing to say "okay, let her play somewhere in the gov't if you have to... since Barack is trying to keep a lot of folks happy on all sides, Reps, Dems, and pro-Hillary Dems too... but I think *anywhere except* the Secretary of State would be a better spot for her.... ;P
She has shown a careless, cavalier, unprofessional disregard for foreign dignitaries, to the level which could perhaps be called "childish", certainly not "diplomatic"...
This is not how to get things done when you are supposed to breed a conducive spirit of discussion and negotiation as a national ambassador.
Two prominent examples:

rather disturbing.... *sigh*.

Date: 2008-11-30 05:48 pm (UTC)As far as Hillary... she is a psycho hose-beast evil creature of doom and such, but I'd give her a lot more leeway than most folks. She was the one controlling much of what Bill did in office, and under him the US did amazingly well in foreign relations for the first time in ages. Yes she's evil, but unlike other politicians you know what you're getting and she is good at what she does. =O.o=

Date: 2008-12-01 12:09 am (UTC)I think her appointment is pretty smart, for a lot of reasons.
#1 = She is tough enough for the position, and will be able to stare down the bad guys.
#2 = She's shown she's not afraid to use the 'feminine' factor to manipulate. This will allow her to exercise a softer side as well, which the US desperately needs in international affairs.
#3 = Placing her in a position of power like SOS nullifies any suggestion of undermining Obama's administration from the sidelines. She now IS a major part of his administration.
#4 = Eight years (assuming Obama gets re-elected) will give her the high-level experience that will make her a prime candidate for 2016. A woman, and with that background. Assuming she still holds ambition for the white house.

Date: 2008-12-01 09:03 am (UTC)I'm just disappointed, initially in the pick.. but I'm willing to give her a listen and chance in this new venue...
But.. I will have to respectfully disagree with your point #4 ... Unless by some miracle she makes some kind of pivotal-epiphany-level change, she demonstrated during the election campaign that she isn't as capable as Obama, or many of the other candidates.
Curious what you thought of the links I posted above? ;>

Date: 2008-12-01 03:07 pm (UTC)Wether at 69, that's viable, remains to be seen. I suppose it depends on how she handles the job over the next 8 years. (Forgive me for assuming an 8 year term, I'm not trying to say that's what I think should happen, just that's probably what Democratic leadership is thinking of).
Yeah, I did check out those links. I didn't give them much cred, as the first one, being a minor joke on the KGB, isn't that much of a diplomatic Faux-Pas. Russians aren't like Indonesians. It probably translated to a compliment!
The second link is about her not being able to pronounce a Russian PM elect's name. Please. She knew it, she got the first syllable out... but couldn't pronounce it. An unexpected question on the spot. Again, this is no big deal... not worthy of any thought by either the Russians or American state departments! Now, if she buggered it up when dining with the President at a state dinner, well... that'd be worthy of being called a problem. Hell, I'm reading the name straight from the report, and I can't pronounce it! That doesn't rate as anything but fodder for news blogs trying to find something to complain about, as I see it.
I maintain it shows good judgement on Obama's side to put her in this prime position. I think he's thinking with his head, and not his heart. He's put aside the turbulent history and made a good call. Have faith, oh worried avian! I may not agree with what's happening in a specific sector of the US right now, but I'm not getting too worried about what I'm seeing otherwise.
Anyway, if she muffs things up, he'll just fire her and get someone else.

I love yer description of 'er!... but no worries, I'm jus' expressin' my lingering doubts (which I try to keep pretty limited in this journal)... but I will still be glad to give 'er a chance, as stated in another comment... if Barack feels she's worth the shot, and if he wasn't forced into it..

Date: 2008-12-01 06:43 am (UTC)EDIT: I guess I should clarify that I'm not picking on you particularly here...it's just something I've noticed about the Democratic Party in general. If Republicans had won a big election like this, they'd be looking for ways to unify behind their candidate and help him achieve his agenda. Democrats don't do that...when we win big, we immediately get suspicious of our candidate and look for ways to undermine him. I think this is why public policy has drifted so far rightward; Republicans simply get more done because they aren't self-defeating like Democrats are. I'm worried Obama's big policy projects -- health care reform, in particular -- will die by a thousand cuts, and most of those cuts will be inflicted by his fellow Democrats.

Do not try to find someone that Russia will approve of, since you will not like that person.

Date: 2008-12-01 01:06 pm (UTC)it may be true... ;D
But a diplomat usually cannot just go around throwing tantrums and casting aspersions... it just slows down progress.
If we act snotty, then we are no better than they are.. I'm just saying that we are all entitled to be angry at the difficult 'other side', but for the person we have entrusted to negotiate with them and represent us (the Secretary of State), we have to be better than the others who do the name calling. We're just getting out of the childish Bush years, so it'd be nice if the momentum keeps heading toward a better place :}
