I didn't see either, but my mother was watching. She came outside crying, while I was mowing the yard, and said "I was watching the kentucky derby, and I picked this beautiful horse, the only girl horse there, and she came in second, but then they killed her!" It took a few minutes for me to find out what -really- happened. I feel sorry for the horse, and my mother.
Is it some sick tradition to kill a horse for a broken leg??? Yea... back in the day they had to in order to save it from being killed by lions. Just cast it up and leave the horse to breed or something.
I've never liked horse racing - ever since I was an apprentice and worked at the races here (doing the PA tech for race meetings).
It's just wrong that a horse that is pushed to the point of breaking it's ankles is killed. That their diet is so finely controlled for building speed that their bone mass drops so they become so fragile - and you can't tell me that it's not possible to brace a horse. Sure, it may not run again... but killing is the cheapest way to deal with the problem, I suppose.
