it's pretty cool; they started it last year. I like the idea of a dollar coin, makes vending machine change easier. I was glad to see the Sacagawea dollar program and thought it was clever that they made the alloy golden but also electromagnetically the same as the Susan B. Anthony dollar so the coins could be used interchangeably in vending machines.

the Liberty reverse is unusual since it says "$1" as opposed to "One Dollar" ... so it looks IMHO like a bus token or something.

It amused me that the demand that brought back the dollar coin for use as change in vending machines outpaced the supply of Susan B's stored in vaults and the Sac dollars weren't ready yet, that they actually minted new Susan B. dollars in 1999.

It's basically just a round version of the loonie (which have 11 sides). Worth about the same as a penny was way back when pennies were invented. ;)

Heard about it a while back, but had forgotten. There was a stink about "In God We Trust" supposedly being left off of the coins, and it was being yelled about as an indication of America going downhill... but the inscription is on the edge, not on either face. They've changed that for all coins after the first four, to avoid controversy.

Well I now work a full time retail job in addition to the 30 hours a week I spend in vet clinics, and I have to say I have seen those exactly once. One person came in and spent two of them, only one of which had been in circulation for any amount of time.

I actually have not had anyone spend either a Sakajawea dollar or a Carter Quarter as of yet. Normally the only way these get into circulation is if someone has bought a train ticket or postage stamps with a $20 and gotten them as change.

I've actually surprised a few people by showing them a 1999 SBA dollar. Its visibly different from the older ones, the quality of the minting is significantly less.

I used to cash checks at my bank and specifically ask for 50 cent pieces and $2 bills. But these ahve gotten so far out of circulation the bank doesn't even stock them anymore.

Yeah. The controversy was sparked when the edge milling was accidentally left off part of the initial run, as I recall.

I got some of these as change from a vending machine on the Seattle-Bainbridge ferry, last weekend.

I have to say, I generally support the idea of a dollar coin, but I don't think they'll ever really catch on unless the dollar bill is eliminated.

Yeah, I think you're right. That, combined with the fact that most people don't pay attention to the edge, turned that into a drama-fest. O.o

Yeah, I was at my bank a few months ago and saw a sign about the James Madison dollar. I asked for a few and have had five of them either on my dresser or in my pocket ever since...just can't bear to spend them yet...
