really feeling bad for my buddies (and lotsa other folks) using Windows right now... this RPC shutdown worm has made it to the top story on the news, where they say it might even affect around 50% of the computers in use WORLDWIDE :(
if you don't have a mac, you might wanna ZOOM to the microsoft security update site to get the fixes. apparently the viciousness of this thing doesn't even require email or a pop-up... it simply sneaks in through an open port, which they say is generally #135. A firewall -could- possibly prevent this, but I've already heard of a half dozen people I know who have gotten it. (deeeeep thanks to
yoru for the initial posting about this)
when I went to help two people fix this things today, we get to the microsoft site, and after okaying the updates, the computer just sits there... which I'm assuming is because the whole world is trying to update right now :| We left the computer on overnight in the office, in hopes that tomorrow the update will be there.
if you get this, at least the RUN -> SHUTDOWN /A command seems to abort the worm poison for one session once the dialog box hits, but the computer still operates sluggishly.
best wishes you all.. I am not gonna start my Windows machine for a *long* time, until I hear this is over. :/
