I'm a little down tonight, and I don't mean warm soft fluffy bird down.. :/
We got a new kitty a couple weeks ago, since mom's mourning for the one we lost in June had diminished sufficiently that she wanted to try another presence in her life again.

So it's this maybe one year old young calico-tortoise-shell ladycat, which had a bit of a cold. We were told to wait two weeks after the spaying to do anything, and the cold still hadn't gone away, so we had her looked at a few days ago, and they kept her for treatment.

Those first two weeks we had her, she was very demure and purrrgly and soft and, well, unobtrusive. Even gave her a name with the word 'purr' in it. Today when we brought her home, she was very energetic, which is fine too.. we figured, feeling a lot better probably. We played a lot with the string like we've been doing. She ate. She used the box like she always does.

Then tonight where she usually sits purring on the couch while I read on the computer, she jumped my hand and tore it up pretty good.

I feel like I've lost a friend :/

Yeah, we've had hyperactive spastic cats before, but not that often. I don't relish the thought of being on the lookout for Kato while walking around the house. Works great in comedy movies... not in RL. ;>

Anyways... so I'm a little bummed out this isn't the cat we thought we had... unless it was just a fluke.

*sigh*

Cats are like that. Girl cats especially so.

They're just prone to randomly attacking the hell out of you. Which is why there's so many comics about it happening.

YEah... in a few hours, she was back to the purring ^V^

(still, I don't trust her like I used to)...

and yep!.. I was trying to attribute it to gender, and maybe there is a higher likelihood with females.. Still, when I traced back thru the ones I've known in the past, I can think of a few that were never like that, and some others that were.

Oh it was probaly a fluke sweetheart. Cats are tempermental creatures. X) I've had a cat.. loveing, sweet, she was my best friend, my familiar. There was this bond between us that somepeople just wouldn't understand.

There were days she would be all purring and in my lap... and there were days she's tear up my hand if I just pet her.

Give it time hon.. she's just a kitten. It might have been a surge of energy and preditory instinct. Gotta remember, cat's arn't fully tamed beasts. They have this wild preditory need within them XD

That sounds -exactly- like Roz's old cat, She-ra! Cute calico cat, sometimes sweet, sometimes a homicidal nutcase. Roz and her mom loved that cat, even though she would sometimes go crazy biting, scratching (the cat, not Roz [mostly]).

wowww... ;P
and here I thought they only had trouble with what they do to the shoes... but, well.. that ain't so great either 8|

The calico we had before this was a doll. She would sleep with her face tucked into my underarm, and drag her piece of yarn around the house. Never got spazzy... though we did have some spazzy cats in the past, we were just kids then, and things were naturally a bit more riotous around the house anyway :D

Ouchie! Cats' pent-up energy can express itself in explosive bursts of activity. This one seems to have developed some bad habits in that regard and might need a declawing operation if she can't be re-trained. She'll probably mellow out as she gets older, like in about 5 years. ;)

Oohh never ever declaw a cat. That's worse then anything you can do to them. I mean, how would you like having your finger taken off up to the first knuckle? That's what they do to declaw a cat. X|

Yep. For some reason, we never hear suggestions to pull out all of a dog's teeth if it bites or chews, but it's okay to mutilate and cripple a cat if it scratches the couch.

I know. It seems kind of double standard at times. There are other options aside ripping out kitty's toes. There;s this plastic material that can be placed over the claws. They can still retract into their sheaths and stuff.. but they can't scratch up anything.

Declawing a cat causes other health issues, aside from making it hell to properly clean themselves, itch, at times walk.(Like I said, it's takeing out the bone right up to the first knuckle, try walking if they did that to your toes ...) The rather.. violent catty side of this lil' ol' cougar would love to show whoever thought of declawing cats first a few good scratches. >.>

in all seriousness.. *fuzzle*
heh... we did actually have the Softpaws Claw Covers put on her, but, as the vet says, it's a trial and error process. Some cats are candidates, and some chew 'em off right away.. heh.. which is what she did. :>

The doc told us there's another humane option, which is adjusting their tendons back a little, so they can't grab so hard that it hurts. We may do that eventually. Mom got pretty well bloodied-up today. :/

I know from experience that tortoise-shell cats are insane! (I have one that is about 11 years old) They take a few years to calm down. They are very lovable cats you just have to be careful not to make them think that you are playing. Just give them time. :)

wow.. yikes!! That certainly sheds a lil' more light on the situation... 8|
Mom picked her out though, cuz of the way kitty acted so calm and friendly to her at the shelter, but I guess now we know that puddytat was fatigued from having the fever temperature.

Well, I did show her my talons after it seemed like she wasn't planning to stop... so she ran off underneath the table and stayed there for a few hours. That's when I got feeling bad, and came to write the posting. *peep*

I agree with the female cats being moody thing. Also, they do usually mellow a little with time. My advice, if you really want a lovey lap cat, get a neutered male.

funny you should mention that..
we picked up one just like that on Thursday, in hopes it would also be a playful companion for her a bit, and reduce some of her dependency on us for the playtimes.

Yeah.. nearly every cat we've had has indeed mellowed with time... except one. She was the one we used to see chasing coyotes 8>
She was a ice lap cat too... but... don't you dare move until she is done with her snooze! She lived to 17 and probably would've gone longer, but we think a raccoon or an owl got her.
