I am just not sure what to think about Macs any more. :|
I bought an iBook new a couple years ago, and after just a year it was starting to have problems with the screen and keyboard (the logic board was recalled on that one).
Ah just got a used one from a friend 6 months ago, and the screen just gave up some pretty scary portents of things to come. :/
It's a keen machine, but oy... are these things solid any more?
Also got a great used one last year too, and it great as a portable work machine, but it's too slow and the HD is a bit slow to go very far with it. And the batteries are $160. *shudder* (luckily this one hasn't had a single hardware issue.. knock on wood as they say..)
The concept of these machines is terrific, but if they are going with shoddy stuff, then that's a lotta dough to keep believing in. And as many have said around blogs etc. is that the new machines with Intel sounded *awesome* at their release, but they still have a LOT of limitations and support, and they won't allow most of the older software to run (MORE big bucks retooling). Bleah.
:| After the last decade and a half of mac trying to be windows, and windows trying to be mac, I have to admit that there doesn't seem to be a significant difference anymore (except for macs resisting viruses, and who knows how long that'll last. I've caught mac viruses before). And the advantage is nearly cancelled since windows has rewind (restore) and macs don't. BIG drawback.
Just upgraded a customer to Tiger also, and it killed their printer, and neither mac nor the printer manufacturer is releasing an update. Apple just wants you to buy the new OS, and the printer company just wants you to buy a new printer. Oh yeah, and a lake of ink.
Bleah.

Date: 2006-03-10 12:04 am (UTC)Works on all the hardware... hates all printers of all kinds... and can look like windows... mac... star trek screens.... matrix... or any other real or mythical OS in existance... and has the advantage of runing on PC hardware... Intell... AMD.... cyrex... IBM... mac hardware.... other hardware... sun hardware.... as well as that old PDP11 you have in the garage. ":)

oooo!
Date: 2006-03-10 04:06 am (UTC)I know how yuo love your clamshell so much, and I'm stoked that it has proven to be such a sturdy pal for ya!
The 100% mention of problems with the white ones is disconcerting, but well and good to be aware of... :/
I wanted to believe Powerbooks would be a sturdier salvation for me too, and who knows, maybe this 667 had a ruff life before me, but it is the one I was referring to with the recent prob... it is a white one though, albeit a Powerbook still.
I've been able to postpone the imminent demise by propping things under one corner to squeeze components tighter (which may be coming loose or suffering metal fatigue, etc)...
Instead of 3 iBooks though, I has the one iBook 500 12" (the one that was recalled), this Powerbook 667mhz, and another black sorta-clamshell Powerbook 400mhz with SCSI. I must say that the 400 black one has given me NO problems whatsoever, so it really lives up to the legend of being sturdier, ..I just don't use it too much because it's the slowest one, and I also wanted to keep it free of personal info so it could be the one I travel with.
As ya know I'm pretty ingrained in system 9 since I dread spending alla moolah to get new stuff for X ... but I do use X pretty regularly for work, and have gotten a few lil goodies. But darn it, 9 is still way faster. Photoshop opens in 2 seconds, whereas it takes over 15 seconds on X. ;P
I run Jaguar on one machine, Panther on another, and fiddle with a Tiger at work ;> *hehe*
My apporach is that I like to have one type of as many systems as possible in working order, to be the best as I can at my job. *peeps and wingfuzzles ya*
Thanks muchly for the reminder about .mac and iDisk.. *flufflescritches the dragon* ..is it still about $100 a year..?

Date: 2006-03-10 04:14 am (UTC)Know what finally made me throw up my wings and move on though?
1. Documentation sucks majorly with things ya run on it, for the most part.
2. And there isn't too much you CAN run in comparison.
but the biggest issue for me was
3. Installations ;P
There are SO many different ways of installing and configuring things, all at the discrestion of the programmer.. no real standards.. and no guarantee you'll be able to run an app again after the first time, let alone even FIND it. Oh! that's another thing...
4. Trying to FIND stuff. The searching function is way too archaic.
Now3 I'm not saying it's bad.. it just isn't really friendly for everyday use in normal tasks, at least as far as one week of looking went. Given more time I'm sure I could make a fw more pleasant discoveries, but not without more time (less time doing other things), and without haveing someone to ask for help when a question arises.
Thanks fur the comment! :9 *fuzzle*
*blushes beakily*
Date: 2006-03-14 11:18 am (UTC)and yup!... I'd have that nice 400mhz tank in service every night if I didn' wanna save it for on the road dependability.. and I'm gonna try to squeeze as much time outa this titanium as I can.
My current workaround is.. it seems to be holding steady and working the last few days, since I squeezed the top left corner together by propping things under the bottom left... Maybe something is just loose in there.. *sigh*...
re: photochop.. :9 *warble* ... I'ave had it since version 2 *fluffles feathers*... and I usually use version for quick edits, and 4 for advanced edits. When I'm on X, I use CS.. yup (haven't upgraded that yet..).
oh! and I ventured into .Mac again just today! (for the first time since they took away our freeeeeee lifetime guaranteed membership.. grumble...) ....but yeah, it looks pretty nice. Signed up for a business client. It's a pity they only allow 4G online... I thought the backup iDisk would be better... but at least the software does allow for other media too.
The one thing they forgot to say (or was hidden enough such that I didn't see) is they need to say prominently that one needs to add settings in the System Pref too, after signing up (it doesn't do it automatically!) ;P ...and thus the backup util was still saying trial version until we did that. Everything else went very smoothly.. even fixing a driver that Tiger broke. *hugpats ya muchly thanks*.. :>
