Being art, another unknown is just how much of the intent will be perceived by their audience.

Indeed -- that chart would be very different for each consumer of a person's art -- regardless of that person's intent. The best one can hope for is to put something out that is basically good -- so that on average, the results will be acceptable, and an improvement of the world.

Of course, if you're doing this for a living, all bets are off. ];-)

You've got to be pretty creative in some sort to create something that is unappealing to many people and has no relation to your own self. Take tax forms for example, no science going on there!
