Frequently I hear hispanic parents addressing their kids as Mama or Papa or (Papi) .. dunno if this is a new thing, or a cultural habitation that I just missed in my previous days.

I heard this all the time growing up (predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in inner city Chicago 80s/90s). Also common was "mamacita" and "papito".
