ceagleMany of ya will remember, but mebbe some of ya won't... when it was a big project to find LP and 45 records if they were a bit on the rare side... not just an internet search, but using phone books, calling around, writing letters, and planning trips and budgets and going to physical locations to sift through stacks or in-person purchase vinyl records. :}
I don't remember where I bought every single one, but here's a few that I do for one reason or another, just for fun:
Tower Records on Sunset in Hollywood - an Elvis Costello album and a Linda Scott album
Virgin Records (across the street) - wow, I don't remember anything specific here...
A-1 Record Finders on Melrose - Frank Zappa's Uncle Meat album ($20.. ouch!)
Cole's Rare Records on Vine St in Hollywood - the first song at Buddy Holly's last concert, Fake Out by Frankie Sardo ($9)
Record Collectors on Santa Monica - the Buddy Holly box set of all recordings
Wallich's(?) Wholesale - the America Sings soundtrack from the Disneyland ride. They had several and I got four of them (two of each type), two with the track only, and two with extra songs (including booklet!) ^v^
Amoeba in Hollywood - I bought quite a few things here, but also don't remember specifics
Mr. C's Rare Records in Orange - the most expensive record I ever bought, the Beatle's Xmas fan club recordings collected for DJ play ($125.. ouch ouch!)
Blockbuster music - ohhhhh I bought a lot of CDs here, because you could preview them, and I wound up liking most of them :>
Big Ben's in Pasadena - well here's a place where I alllllmost bought one and wish I did... Madonna's first 45 rpm single... It was packaged like no other single was ever packaged, and I kept talking myself out of it, thinking it was just hype. Who knew she would take off...
Penny Lane in Pasadena - Billy Bragg's LP with She's Got A New Spell
Licorice Pizza and Music Plus in Arcadia - LOTS of collectible 45s, like Tonight Tonight and Remember Then...
Record Jackpot in Arcadia - where I bought -most- of my collection. I was a tough customer unfortunately, because I didn't like bad pressings or other defect, so I asked for replacements a few times, to which the owner obliged, because I spent sooo much of my allowance there. Many of these were picked from hit lists and the Phonolog catalog, and ordered to be picked up a week later.
...there were quite a few more stores that I didn't frequent as often, and of course a few conventions :>
I used to sit and listen for hours, vinyl spinning under the needle...
