Since my last cel phone (my 1st smartphone) was horrid, I've been keeping my 2nd one very lean, to avoid any possible complications. Sure the phone itself may have been crap, but extra apps didn't help. And also Twitter was a bit too intrusive at work.... all of which led to why I haven't put it on this phone.

Fast forward, I had gotten a 1st iPad used a long time ago on eBay for about $300.. I guess they were $600 new at the time. That iPad worked well for a couple years, but then sorta became a brick of incompatibility.
So I was planning to try a new tablet to use for Twitter, and I happened to see a Samsung Galaxy at WalMart for $110, but they were out of stock. I tried a second time... still out of stock... so I figured I'd try another WalMart.

As I pulled up to a different one in an unfamiliar town, I noticed there was a BestBuy next to it, and decided to check the prices in there...

They had the same one for $79 ! ...soooo much cheaper even than a used iPad!
I was just about to buy it, when I turned around and saw another tablet.. an Amazon Fire... for just $49 !! ...now that's at the point of giving them away!

I read the packaging and it said it does pretty much everything tablets do (not just Kindle stuff)... so I picked that one up! ^v^

So far it seems pretty solid!.. It did take a half hour for updates when it first started up, but since then it's been solid... even tested Twitter, and whew... seems good!

*still boggling over a $49 tablet*....

That's a really good deal! I never liked that the Kindle Fire was limited to the Amazon App Store but for a low enough price, I may reconsider.

Do you have a link to the item itself? I wonder if it'll work with Virgin Mobile.

I had a Kindke Fire HD, a re-gift from a co-worker who was too tech-challenged to work with it. I really liked it, and it allowed me to get free books as I have Amazon Prime, but I let my son have it to use as an Internet device when he went to Japan and I just assume he still uses it.

As I've said, too, my second generation iPad is choking now, particularly here on lj.

WT's Fire 7" is going ok after 3 years, it works well enough for movies and web stuff. I personally don't like the constant BUY STUFF!!!! Amazon puts on it, but given the price, it'll do in a pinch.

hehheh... yep, I think they used to be just color Kindles, but apparently they morphed!... I read the box to be sure it could do regular tablet stuff before diving in, ..and also made sure I could return it if it didn't live up... So far so good!

That's awrsome!! Several times I alllllmost pushed the button to register my Amazon account, but I've held off so far... maybe that's why it hasn't bugged me. I figured if I can surf and use the web-based Twitter, I didn't need to download the app from the Amazon store :D *tailwags*

So how's it work? Does it just connect to the internet over wifi, or do you need a phone service for it?

Ah yeah.. meant to mention that.. *blushabeak*... indeed it just hooks up to wi-fi, so a phone plan isn't really a part of the tablet thing...

Just as a side note.. the predecessor to this Fire model was the old black n white Kindle, which was actually just for reading Amazon digital books, and it came with perpetual Free nationwide broadband for that purpose!... Newer Kindles just use wi fi, so it's a bit sad for Kindles... but on the other hand, this thingy is basically a tablet, so it does apps (like Twitter) and has a browser (called Silk) which is for surfing the internet, so ya don't really even need the Twitter app itself. For those who don't mind though, you can register the tablet with your Amazon account and interface with it that way.

It is shipped with the 8 G on-board and about half is available, but it also has an SD slot which holds up to a 128 G chip!

Indeed!

And I asked if he was using the tablet and he said no so I'm trying to reaquaint myself with it! I can use Firefox and it will download adblock! Google aps are troublesome but I'll get there :o)
