Has Lavasoft's Ad-Aware finally gone to being a purchase item only?
The free edition doesn't seem to be able to download definitions anymore, and the online reading seems to indicate that the free edition is now a "trial" edition. :|

Gods, I hope not! That's one of the best programs out there for spyware--and I scan weekly with it!

All the reason for them to charge.

Best of luck.. :|
I *think* one might be able to manually install the lastest defs (after reading thru a bit more), but that doesn't guarantee that they are useable, if they are now in a format the older software doesn't recognize.
I might try it after a while (after backing up the current defs)... it'd be nice if they still work, but my automated updater doesn't seem to work now, as of three days ago.

Yeah.. I may consider that. I don't mind paying a fair level of cost for good software and features.

I do prefer if it is clearly defined on a website, and not murky about what's going on. For instance, if the window said "the free build no longer is supported" rather than "no available updates" (when they seem to be right there on the site), initiating curiousity and an investigation which has taken a significant amount of time of of the day by now :|

Luckily I don't feel extreme urgency on this one just yet, since I do use Firefox most of the time on the Windows machine, so I don't feel too threatened when surfing :> *wingfuzzles your ears*

My main protections are this (AdAware/AdAwatch), and AV antivirus, and a hardware firewall (router) and a software firewall.

All the reason NOT to. If people stop running scans because the software is demanding payment, then their shitty computers that aren't being taken care of are going to be sending more and more crap into my inbox that takes MY time, which isn't free, to deal with.

Are you using Ad-Aware Personal (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/)? According to the info there, it still seems to indicate that it's free.

My PC broke down last night so I can't test it though.

I have no idea, but I can offer hugs in this time of potential need!

You're absolutely right, Bur.. ^v^
I'm just a tad suspicious of the wording though, since it says it's "downloadable free of charge", but not explicitly usable free of charge.
Also on the same page, it says you can go to download dot com and get it, and there it says "Free to try" which usually means trial software, and then also it says "Limitations = Real time protection disabled" ... so I'm just a leetle skeptical now, and that's why I put the posting up.

Tanks mucho for the comment!

For what it's worth, nothing seems to have changed on my own copy of Ad Aware Personal, and when I checked the website, it still said it was free for personal use and invited you to download.

Perhaps your copy just got corrupted in some way?

I rather miss talking with you, wagtailed eagle. I hope I get to see you soon. *HUG*

Thanks for the warning! I'll have to keep a close watch on the site and see what plays out from here...*sigh*

I read a little more about Ad Aware, and I am running Ad Aware SE Plus, which includes AdWatch realtime scanning, and I am pretty sure the fine print at the site said that only AdAware Personal is free now (no realtime scanning).. so maybe this SE was free before, or a trial version, or I bought it and need to find the receipt to update it... ;P
rarr.
