Okeeee... well, anything more one should know about the .NET frame work for XP? good, bad, indifferent?
I downloaded the thing since apparently it's needed to run some newer programs, and then found out it
disabled automatic windows logon, so I had to go to HERE to fix it. Lovely. :D

I hope this info helps anyone who might be in a similar situation, and I hope to hear from folks who
also might know more about this thing.

p.s. This is not a superduper important machine, so I prefer to be automatically logged in ^V^ ...

p.p.s. The program I wanted to run is SharpKeys, to disable the ever-tormenting CapsLock. *flaps wings*

That's apparently because installing the .NET Framework update creates an additional user.

The dot-net framework is a microsoft thing that you either love or hate, but it's under the guise of "patching" a bunch of MS stuff. For example, DLLs are made harder to hack, and I believe checksummed or something, to be sure they're not tampered with. There's a few other "execution level" type things, as well as some security features, "infrastructure" features, etc.

I'm not a big fan of voluntarily installing bloat, particularly microsoft bloat, but it's fairly standard, and frankly XP should have it already anyway. Win2k certainly doesn't. Anything written with the newer dot net programming languages (ie, newer than Visual whatever 6.0) will require it.

Sorry I can't specifically help with the auto login thing. I assume you already checked out the security policies/control panel/etc. I'll see if an XP friend of mine may happen to know more details.

Dotnetz is a "catch all" logo for microsawfts highly managed approach to everything from how applications are written to how they get installed.
The programming environment changes have been keeping me on my toes lately. :)

Ah yes.. I was lookin' at that. I'm guessing it's method of internal operation, and doesn't actually allow any external access to the system... I hope.

Thanks for the input!

*wingfuzzles gratefully*
No worries about the login issue.... applying the registry fixes from the link in my posting fixed the issue.
I guess I was just surprised by the drastic change from how this is done in previous versions, but at least the reset worked :9
